10 Questions to Ask Before Approving Any Repair

Jul 27, 2026 · 4 min read

A short checklist of questions that filter out vague diagnoses, hidden fees and unnecessary upsells — politely.

  1. What diagnostic test confirmed the problem? Can I see the results?
  2. Is this repair urgent, recommended, or optional?
  3. What happens if I delay it?
  4. Are these OEM, OEM-equivalent, or aftermarket parts?
  5. What warranty applies to parts and labor?
  6. How many labor hours does this job include, at what rate?
  7. Are there fees beyond parts and labor?
  8. Will old parts be returned to me if I ask?
  9. Could other work become necessary once you open it up? What is your process then — call me first?
  10. Can I get the final list in writing before authorizing?

Shops that answer these comfortably are usually shops worth keeping. Evasion is not always bad faith, but it removes your ability to make an informed decision.
