A Mechanic Told Me I Need a New Transmission: How to Verify

Transmission work is the biggest ticket item most owners face. Learn what to check before authorizing an expensive repair.
A transmission replacement or rebuild is among the most expensive jobs on any vehicle. Before approving:
1. Get the fault evidence. Ask for the diagnostic trouble codes, the fluid condition sample and the actual behavior observed.
2. Confirm the diagnosis path. Many "transmission failures" turn out to be solvable with a fluid service, a solenoid, a torque-converter lockup issue or a wiring fault.
3. Compare options. Ask for separate quotes for a rebuild, a used low-mileage unit, and a remanufactured unit with warranty. Prices differ enormously.
4. Check labor assumptions. Transmission access varies from dropping the subframe (a few hours) to engine removal (days).
5. Verify history. A car that never had its transmission fluid serviced may still be repairable; a car with metal debris in the fluid likely needs a replacement.
Never authorize transmission work without a written breakdown of parts, labor and warranty terms.
