Air Conditioning Not Cold? The Cost of Common AC Repairs
Aug 8, 2026 · 4 min read
From a simple recharge to a full compressor job — what AC repairs cost and how to avoid paying for the wrong fix.
AC systems don't consume refrigerant. A low-charge complaint almost always means a leak somewhere in the system.
Common causes and typical cost drivers:
- Recharge with leak dye — cheap, but if the leak is large you'll be back quickly.
- Condenser replacement — often the first thing to corrode from road debris and salt.
- Compressor failure — the expensive one; replacing it properly includes flushing the system and replacing the receiver-drier.
- Electrical faults — a failed fan, relay or pressure switch can mimic a dead compressor.
Before approving a compressor, ask for the diagnosis: system pressure readings, leak test results and whether the electrical clutch engages. A shop that immediately quotes a compressor without diagnosis is guessing — and you're paying for it.
