How Much Does a Brake Pad Replacement Actually Cost?

Parts, labor and regional differences behind the most common car repair — and how to read a brake quote.
Brake pad replacement is the most common repair on this site, and the most variable. A quote can range from budget aftermarket parts at a small independent shop to OEM parts at a dealer, with a 3x price difference.
What drives the price:
- Parts brand — budget sets cost a fraction of premium or OEM sets. Brakes are safety-critical: pick certified quality, not the cheapest option.
- Axle count — most quotes are per axle. A full car (two axles) roughly doubles parts and labor.
- Labor time — typically 1–2.5 hours per axle on modern cars. Vehicles with seized pins or rusted hardware take longer.
- Region — metropolitan dealers charge far more per hour than rural independents.
Reading a brake quote: check the per-axle price, ask whether rotors are resurfaced or replaced, confirm pad brand and warranty, and verify the flush (if listed) is actually needed.
