How to Read Your Mechanic Quote Like a Pro

Aug 12, 2026 · 5 min read

Understanding the difference between parts cost, labor time and shop fees helps you ask the right questions before approving work.

A typical quote contains several components:

  1. Parts — the cost of components being installed. Ask whether prices are for OEM or aftermarket brands.
  2. Labor — calculated as labor hours × hourly rate. Hours usually come from industry time guides.
  3. Fees — shop supplies or environmental disposal fees. Small percentages are normal; large fixed fees deserve questions.
  4. Taxes — applied according to local rules.

Before approving work, ask what diagnostic test confirmed the problem, what warranty applies, and which items are urgent versus optional. If a line item is far above the typical range for your vehicle and region, request an explanation in writing.
