What Is a Fair Hourly Rate for a Mechanic?

Rates range from rural independents to prestige dealers. Learn what a normal range looks like and when a rate deserves scrutiny.
Hourly labor rates are the biggest single variable in repair costs. Typical averages (illustrative):
- Rural independent shop: low end of the regional range.
- Urban independent / franchise: mid range.
- Dealer, mainstream brand: 20–40% above independents.
- Dealer, premium brand (BMW, Mercedes, Audi): the top of the range, sometimes more.
A rate above the top of your region's normal range deserves a question — but consider what it buys: factory training, specialized tools, loaner programs, and warranty on work.
To compare fairly, always compare total hours × rate per line, not just the rate. A dealer quoting fewer hours at a higher rate can cost the same as an independent quoting more hours at a lower rate.
